What is Sport Psychology?

It is the scientific study of how psychology influences sports, athletic performance, exercise, and physical activity. There are 2 fundamental areas which psychologists may focus on when working with athletes and individuals:

1: Assisting and educating athletes on the psychological principles that can be utilised to achieve optimal mental health, improve performance and increase motivation.
2: Learning how participation in any physical or sporting activity can affect an individual’s psychological development, health and well-being throughout a person’s lifespan.

Sports psychology is often utilised by athletes and individuals for the following reasons:

  • Cope with the intense pressure that comes with competitive sport
  • Assist with overcoming problems with focus and motivation
  • Burnout and overtraining
  • Improve performance
  • Defining goals
  • Recovering from injury
